Days 10 – 13: More Holiday Movies
Day 10
Arthur Christmas
Directed by: Sarah Smith
Screenplay: Peter Baynham (screenplay), Sarah Smith (screenplay)
Starring: James McAvoy, Bill Nighy, Jim Broadbent, and Hugh Laurie
Streaming: Amazon Prime Rental
Spoilers: I don’t intend to
This movie is highly rated on Rotten Tomatoes with a 71% and IMDb is 7.1. So, I watched it. It was ok. It is a little different when it comes to a Christmas movie. This is all about Santa and the industry that could be Santa Claus. It is a nice blend of the business of Santa Claus and the need to make Christmas special for all children. It is worth a watch if you like cartoons like I do.
Day 11
Mickey’s Christmas Carol
Directed by: Burny Mattison
Screenplay: Dickens and a bunch of other people
Starring: Alan Young, Wayne Allwine, and Hal Smith
Streaming: Disney+ and I own it
Spoilers: Can I really spoil any version of the Christmas Carol for anyone?
10 out of 10 on the Cheer Meter. I love this movie and I have since I first saw it. It is a classic. I watched it on Thursday b/c of Thursday night football and b/c I had company, so I needed something short and this movie is short. The only issue I have is, is the same issue I have come across lately when watching any Christmas Carol movie. Is it the right thing to do to save Tiny Tim? What if… What if Tim grows up to be a horrible person and the ghosts are evil. Maybe the ghosts really don’t want to save Scooge’s soul but rather save Tiny Tim for their own evil purposes. What if the later becomes the famous London killer Jack the Ripper or some other serial killer. These thoughts are fleeting but it always makes me think this might be a good thing to investigate in the future. Soon as they pass, I think about how cute the little Mouse Tiny Tim is and how much I like it when Scrooge picks him up. I smile and it makes me feel good.
Day 12
Home Alone
Directed by: Chris Columbus
Screenplay: John Hughs
Starring: Macaulay Culkin, Joe Pesci, Daniel Stern
Streaming: Disney+
Spoilers: Probably
Love it. I saw it twice in the theater. I still like it. Although, I am starting to become cynical, I think. Also, I have read to many online fan theories. The parents are idiots and mean. Uncle Frank should be drug into the streets and stoned. I am not talking the 420 type of stoning. I am talking throwing big rocks at asshat. Buzz is a future serial killer. The rest of the kids bully the baby. Overall, the family is just terrible. Then the Kevin is sort of a moron. I know me at that age, I would have called the cops when I woke up all alone in my house. Its like my Mom said though if he would have done that there wouldn’t have been a movie. So, I take step back and watch it through eyes that aren’t so cynical. I watch it like I watched in the theater when I was 15. I also always order cheese pizza when I watch this movie. It is my tribute to Kevin. If you haven’t seen it by now you should watch it.
Day 13 – Movie Marathon
Finding Father Christmas
Streaming: Hallmark VOD
Engaging Father Christmas
Streaming: Hallmark VOD
Marrying Father Christmas
Streaming: Hallmark VOD
I really liked these cheesy Hallmark Movies. The first one made tears stream down my face. I am a sucker for happy ending, so what do you want me to say? Overall, I recommend. Combined they are a 7 out of 10 on the ole cheer meter. These are cheesy and I starting to realize I just really like cheesy Holiday Movies.
Die Hard
Directed by: John McTiernan
Screenplay: Roderick Thorp, Jeb Stuart, and Steven E. de Souza
Starring: Bruce Willis and Alan Rickman
Streaming: Amazon Prime Purchase
Spoilers: eh… the movie is from 88’ is that possible at this point?
So… Is it or isn’t it a Holiday Movie and I don’t know really know what to say about it other than maybe it is? I love Die Hard. I have loved it since my older brother came home and told me about it when I was 12. Growing up I loved Bruce Willis. I loved action movies with lots of guns and explosions. However, in my humble opinion it is not a Holiday movie. Yes, it takes place at Christmas and the main character is only in LA for Christmas. Yes, it has Christmas Carols. Yes, the lead characters name is Holly. However, with all that its not what I think of as a Christmas movie. Perhaps that is on me. It is not the cussing; I could listen to Yippie-Ka-ya Motherfucker all day long. I think when it comes down to it. When, I watch a holiday movie, I don’t want blood, guts, machine guns, c4 and cussing. I want Christmas stuff. Trees, candy canes, Santa, cheesy love stories, parents and children finding belief in the unreal. This is just my opinion. Still a great movie! Still love it. Even though I bought it, it won’t be in the Christmas rotation, but I will watch it over and over at any other time of the year.
Christmas on Holly Lane
Directed by: Michael M. Scott
Screenplay: Diane Messina Stanley, James Stanley
Starring: Sarah Lancaster, Karen Holness, Gina Holden
Streaming: Amazon Prime
Spoilers: probably not
I really liked this movie. It had a cheesy love story or two. A marriage break-up. Old friends connecting. New friendships being forged. Happiness and cheer being spread. None of those are spoilers because you can get all that from the trailer. This movie made me happy. It was fun to watch. I think the cheer meter was at an 8. This movie prompted me to email a friend and say I am addicted to bad Christmas movies. So, you might take my recommendation with a grain of salt.
Yes, I watched five movies on Saturday. It was cold outside, and it is was very relaxing, just exactly what I needed.
Day 13
The Christmas Chronicles
Directed by: Clay Kaytis
Screenplay: Matt Lieberman
Starring: Kurt Russell, Judah Lewis, and Darby Camp
Streaming: Netflix
Spoilers: Probably not…
This movie is ok. It is really cheesy but not cheesy like my Father Time movies or Holly Lane. No this is cheesy like bad Dad joke cheesy. When I watched it first, Rachel and I didn’t enjoy it b/c it felt like a kids movie and a was cheesy in a bad way. Kona and Shiner refused to give an opinion. My Mom and sister really like it and were excited about the sequel. So, I gave it another chance. I am not unhappy I did, I just think the movie was just ok. It was 6 out of 10 on the cheer meter b/c the movie is awfully Christmassy. Watch if you want. I am not sure if that I a recommendation or not. You choose.
