The Vast of Night

This movie I liked.  I liked it a lot.  I am a huge fan of the original X-files series.  This movie reminded me a little of that, a little of the original War of the Worlds movie, and little of Twilight Zone.  There is something epically gritty in the way it was filmed.  Your mind can’t really register that you are watching a movie that was just made, this must have been something made in the late 60’s or 70’s, which I think adds to the fun of the movie.

The characters I like.  This is something that is super important for me to really connect with a movie.  Most of the characters I really like and most of the movies I really like are based on how much I would actually want to hang out with the characters in the movie.  There is a reason why Supernatural and Psych are my favorite shows.  I think Dean and myself would make an epic tag team.  I think we are both extremely complicated older brothers.  I think he is a more of a bully than I am, but I think we are both dicks; but not the super bad kind of dick.  Shawn, Gus, and I well that is just a match made in heaven when it comes to shenanigans.  I digress.  I would really like to hang with Everett Sloan, the fast-taking DJ and hero of our story.  Fay Crocker the curious and inquisitive girl next store type who I think is well on her way to becoming Everett’s sweetie.  Who does not want to be around smart and strong women?  So, sign me up to hang with Everett and Fay.

There is an element of conspiracy in the movie.  Who does not love a good conspiracy theory or two in a small rural town on a Friday or Saturday night?   Especially in the days of yore.  Before we could tape everything and get everyone on a cell phone telephone.  Making this before mainstream media really helps the movie.  The characters fill isolated and on their own.  If the movie took place in modern times it would have not had the same kind of magic.  The isolation from the modern world makes this film feel even scarier because people are disconnected.

It amazes me how many film festivals turned this film down.  I think it is one of the best one that I have watched in recent years.  It kept me thinking about it all night after watching and into the following week.  That to me is a sign of a good movie also.

I think when you take cool characters, a good conspiracy, and set it in a isolated world like “The Vast of Night” you have a great recipe for a very great movie.  It is not on the list of Top 100 movies that I have seen but I think it will be some day, because it definitely will be on mine.
