The Quarantined Sci-Fi Movie List to Date as of 5/19/2020

The following list with is mainly Sci-Fi with a few exceptions to the rule is the movies I have watched since the start of the shelter in place movement in California.  Personally, I love shelter in place mainly b/c I love to work from home it gives me time to take care of my life and work hard at the same time.  That is a balance I can get used too.  I make a joke often that says I like to work at home because I hate people.  That isn't really true.  I don't hate people, not most of them anyway.  The one thing I do hate about sheltering in place is no pools.  I miss swimming.  I love to swim and I know how good it is for my heart.  That is ok, b/c walking has made a huge come back.  Well I am off topic once again.  Funny how that always seems to happen to me.

Why have I been on a Sci-fi bender since late February / Early March?  I don't really know.  The movie viewing started innocent enough.  I wanted to watch all the movies I had in my queue that I had never taken the time to see.  I figured I can't go anywhere right now so now is as good as any time to catch up on movies.  When I started it if you would have told me I would have gotten to 60 plus movies I would have said you are insane.  If you had told me that 90% + of those movies were Sci-fi or listed as Sci-fi movies either in IMDb, Netflix, Disney+, or Amazon, I would have said you were nutz.  It wasn't supposed to be this way.  However, it became a study, then a passion, and then practically a second job.  As if my purpose here was to absorb as many Sci-fi movies as I can.

I have spent a lot of time lately wondering about Sci-fi and why Sci-fi.  It could have been westerns, I love the old west.  It could have been mafia movies, I have always loved the mob.  It could have been chick flicks b/c I love me a good chick flick.  It could have been anime, could have been just about anything but I think it had to be Sci-fi.  My earliest memories of life are of Star Wars, the great Space Opera.  I always dreamed of life beyond the stars on my swing set in Terre Haute, Indiana.  My imagination has taken me to various worlds.

Most of the time when I think of Sci-fi I think of space and space adventure.  To be honest space terrifies me.  The thought of going to space terrifies me.  I think Bones put it best in the 2009 Star Trek re-boot "Space is disease and danger wrapped in darkness and silence."  Ya, that pretty much captures it doesn't.  I mean think of space and the simple vastness of it.  It literally goes on forever.  It is dark and the dark is scary.  It is lonely b/c there isn't much out there but more and more space.  Can you imagine how alone we fill in social distancing.  Imagine being alone on a rocket hurtling through space.  The sure concept of an infinite universe blows my mind hole.   Being out there in it simply destroys it.

Getting to space would destroy me.  Moment of truth here on the Mission to Mars ride as pre-teen I cried because it scared me so bad.  Being shut in a confined space and imaging being shot into the universe was truly terrifying for me.  The same year at Epcot Center I lost my shit on another ride traveling thru time and space.  It was one of the earliest panic attacks I can remember.  No way you are getting me in a rocket and blasting me to the fucking moon.  No, way, no thank, not going to happen.  I can barely take lift off in an airplane.

So, why then the fascination with it? Maybe because it haunts my dreams an no not just because I have watched 64 Sci-fi movies over the last 6 weeks or so.  It always haunted my dreams.  I dream I am in post apocalyptic worlds, I a robot, or things from space give me powers.  I don't know. How fucking cool would it be to standing on a planet and looking out and seeing a world in front of you with rings like Saturn or four moons?  How awesome would it be to meet and great different creatures from different galaxies?  Would it not be epic?

Plus, there is also so much more to Sci-fi than space.  There is the multi-verse theory, which I love, and I believe in.  There are robots, replicants, autons, you name it all kinds of things in Sci-fi that are cool.  I mean I can't sit here and think of all the things that make sci-fi so entrancing to me.  One of my favorites though is the post apocalyptic world we humans leave behind.  Stories being told on top of the reminiscent of some forgotten old world.  As King would say that the world had moved on from.  I love these stories most of all.  All of this stuff drives me to watch as much Sci-fi as I can.

I guess none of it explains why...  I guess part of me wants to have as much knowledge about Sci-fi as I can.  So when I go to tell my space epic, I can do the best job of it that I possibly can.  I don't know.  Maybe, I am just a fan of it, or maybe the answer is both?

Anyway the list so far...

Can't Hardly Wait and Rise of Skywalker are the only movies I had seen before I started this.  Rise of Skywalker was watched on May the 4th...  Can't Hardly Wait deals with fate and I am a sucker for fate, Ka, and Karma.  Hmm, maybe it does fit in from the POV?

I just love this picture.... It is what I think a view from space should look like:
