40 miles last saturday!

Kona was on her walk when we rolled yesterday.  It’s always fun to see here when we are out in a ride.  You can see her trying to track down her Dad as he road by.

The goal was to try and get 50 on Saturday but unfortunately the heat wasn’t with us and I got a Charlie Horse in my leg and David’s back was sore so we decided to cut it a little short.

The ride was good though.  It feels good to spend my time on this lovely Sunday afternoon talking about the ride and paying attention to my blog.  Something I have been neglecting as of late.  Work and life certainly have a way of getting in front of our hobbies.  As much as I would like to blame one or the other the truth is it is both.   I’ve been tired a lot lately and busy so that is a combo that doesn’t get me writing all that often.

Today though is a day for relaxation.  Had a nice workout this morning.   Hanging with Kona in the backyard and writing as I sit here and watch her.    Plus I got meals almost done for the week, a few more hours in the crockpot and my roast will be good to go!  So, all seems right with the world.

The ride yesterday was good.  We started off going out Altamont Pass road to the junkyard.  At the junkyard we turned around and headed for Dyer road.  That out is at about 10 miles.  Where we rested a minute and had a snack.

Right after my snack though my tummy told me it was not doing well and I had to race back to my house.  Luckily, we were very close and I road fast down the pass back home.  I’ve been working really hard trying to figure out my electrolyte mix so that I can stay well hydrated.  The down side to that is some of those drinks are abrasive on the tummy.

So, and unplanned stop at mile 14 came and went and we headed back out.  We took Greenville to Patterson Pass and then went up the Pass to my favorite Cross Road.  I powered up both Patterson Pass and Cross.  David was quite a bit ahead of me on Patterson but that was ok.  I needed to ride my ride and trying to stay with him would have just worn me out.  I have to remember I’m 100 lbs heavier than most people on bikes so just stay in my line and do what I can do.  That is what I did.  At the top of cross we were at the two hour mark and it was PB&J time.   I love the uncrustables they are a welcome addition to my cycle routine.

On Thursday while I was in the office someone asked me why I loved riding hills so much.  I said it was simple, because you get to come back down them.  That is the best part of Cross is the coming down.  It is fast and fun.  I think I got up to 30 MPH coming down.  That is freaking awesome!  I love it.  I try not to go over that because I get scared.

From across we took Tesla to the bike path.  It was midway through the bike path that I cried for a stop because where I straighten my left leg I would get a giant Charlie Horse.  Man did that hurt.  I jumped off my bike and tried to stretch it out.  I walked a little bit, although it was really more of a hobble.  It gotten it loosened up and we got back in and road the trail to Sycamore Grove park, which is a great place to do a potty break and take in some much needed water.

It was at the Grove we decided to call it at 40 since the ride home was going to be about 10 miles.  We were hot and our bodies hurt.  We decided on the way home we’d stop at Safeway and get some burgers for grilling.  Luckily David had money.  I need to start.  For the first time since 2020 I went into a grocery store in the state of California.  I had not been to the store since Covid.  Although I did go into a store with my Mom in Indiana last spring so I much qualify the statement.  I got us some burgers and buns and then we headed off for the last four miles of our ride.

When we got to the turn for my house.  I hit the wall.  I should have eaten something a lot the store but I didn’t.   David called out that we still had another mile to get forty.  The profanity that flowed out of my mouth towards him was not pretty.  However, I knew he was right and I kept following him.  It was the hardest mile of the day.

We made it home after 40 miles!! Whoot whoot!

Kona was happy to see us!  Since we were going to grill out, I did a quick change of clothes and put on my Kona t-shirt that David gave me for Christmas.

Unfortunately the excitement wasn’t done there.  I was making sweet tator tots and I knocked a bottle of water off the cabinet.  It turned on the stove top.   I had a measuring glass sitting on the burner and in my haste to wipe up the water put the water bottle on the burner as well.

A little while later David yelled out to me that we had something melting on the stove.  The entire measuring cup was gone.  Melted into my burner and the water in the water bottle was boiling.   Dios Mio!  I was too tired for this nonsense.

The house smelled awful.  We had to air the place out.  The fire alarm went off.  It was a train wreck.   However the stove top is almost clean now.  Waiting for my new razor blade to get here and I’ll get it all taken care of tonight.

The ride and afternoon were to much David and Kona!  They had to take a nap.

Also got to try out my new toy the Nix so I could know how much I was sweating!!!

Next weekend back to Santa Rosa and the Tour de Pig Course!
